With some of my favorite series on break, I need something to fill my time besides documentary and food shows. Since I like “The Crown”, my sister suggested I watch “Bridgerton”. She said it’s like the books I used to read from Nora Roberts.
Bridgerton is an English Regency era setting featuring 8 close-knit siblings attempt to find love. The siblings are Anthony (Viscount Bridgerton), Benedict, Colin, Daphne, Eloise, Francesca, Gregory and Hyacinth with their mother, Violet (dowager viscountess). This Netflix Original series is produced by Shonda Rhimes (Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal) and Chris Van Dusen. The story is inspired by Julia Quinn’s bestselling novels.
The first season which has 8 episodes, is the story between Daphne Bridgerton and Simon Bassett (Duke Hastings). When I first watched the first episode, it reminded me of a book I’ve previously read since I definitely remember reading a book with a Lady Whistledown. When I googled it, I found it was inspired by Julia Quinn’s book. This made me borrow the book from the library and read it again. The difference between the book and the series is it’s a mixed race cast of characters. It really was an inspiration with some of the storyline taken from the book and some of them were added to make it an original. There were characters which were added that wasn’t part of the book (Marina Thompson) but will crosspath in later books. Hopefully, they would have 8 seasons featuring all Bridgerton children and perhaps another season for the other characters connected to the Bridgertons.
Verdict: If you haven’t read the book and just watch the series, you would fall in love with the characters. From the Queen, to Lady Danbury, to the Bridgertons and Lady Whistledown. However, if you’ve read the book and watch the series, the mixed race cast of characters as well as the Queen and Prince will throw you off. I can’t wait for the next season to come and feature more of the Bridgertons. The story will give you a glimpse what the ton and the royalty do with their time. It also feature some mental problems people face as well as bullying. If you are into royalty and some romance, this show is for you.
